If you read my review on the New Moon Soundtrack you know I didn't like most of the songs. 'Monsters' have been on repeat on my ipod for weeks now. Due to me being a grown up with a job I had to pass up a chance for a phone interview but HB was ok with me submitting questions for the TS blog!

Are you Twilight Saga fans? (its ok if you¹re not I won't yell or scream!:))
yes absolutely! but i am a newbie....i have had to catch up. at this point ihave read all 4 books and seen both movies...

Have you read any of the books?
yep.

Was 'Monsters' written especially for New Moon or did someone hear it and wanted to add it to the soundtrack?
i had the song written before. i recorded it along with the songs that makeup the hurricane bells record, "tonight is the ghost". at the last moment idecided it didn't fit with the record, and so i left it off, and just a fewmonths later it was picked for the movie.

(Answer this question ONLY if the song was written for New Moon) Was this song written with our favorite vampire Edward or Bella's best friend Jacobthe werewolf?
ha! even though i just answered i am going to have to say edward anyway. i am team edward.

I like the fact that Monsters has a dark undertone with an upbeat tempo, it seems to soften the the blow about things that creep in the night, was this intentional? Or a complete accident?
well it was intentional to have a catchy melody with darker words. i thoughtthey balanced together well, you're singing "situations are critical" butyou're still kinda interested to see why.
You were at the premiere in Los Angeles, what do you think of Twilight fans?
oh i saw them before that! we did some hurricane bells shows on the new moon mall tour. the twilight fans are rabid. but from my perspective it was onlygreat. everyone is so excited, and the movie and the music makes them very happy.

Ok, I could not find a bio on the group so I¹m going to ask a sillyquestionŠwho¹re the members of Hurricane Bells?
ha! i'll have to see about that! the record and song in the movie were recorded entirely by me. i'm steve, and i have also been the singer and guitar player in a band called longwave for almost 10 years. i played everyinstrument and recorded every note on the hurricane bells stuff, on the same laptop i am typing on now.

How long have you been together?
well for the shows i have asked some friends of mine, in other bands, tocome and play. the first live hurricane bells show was in september.

Because there's more to you than the New Moon soundtrack , How would youdescribe your music to new fans?
it's got a lot of heart.

Musical influences?
m ward, daniel lanois, t bone burnett, dave fridmann.

Did you grow up in a musical household?
not really. i learned when i was older that my dad had sung in high school.but i never heard him.

If you could do a duet with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?
hmmm i'm going to say ashen keilyn, who sings live with hurricane bells. shealso has a band called scout that i play guitar in/produce. she is great.

Not only I'm in love with Monsters but 'I Can't Remember' made me cry the first time I listened to it. What was the inspiration of the lyrics?
wow thanks. that was an important song for me. i had that a while and didn'tknow how to record it until i just sang it for kicks with the echo on. afterthat it was the easiest song on the record. as for words, i am not sure ican explain any better here than what i wrote, sorry...

Favorite cover songs to perform?
hurricane bells has just started playing "will you still love me tomorrow",just ashen and i. i have always loved that song, and i thought someoneshould do a guy/girl version.

When are you coming to Los Angeles? (Yes this is a strictly selfishquestion!)
ha! i would guess around february. that is when the HB record will bereleased in a physical form, as it is only available now on itunes/amazon.we will be doing some touring around then.

Music Review: New Moon Soundtrack

I was extremely excited to get my copy of the New Moon Soundtrack, yes it was a gift but it's a gift I would gladly return. I can't begin to explain my utter disappointment on how much I DISLIKE this sound track. Now if I had insomnia it would be perfect because it will cause you to fall asleep even while walking. Someone on Twitter asked if all the songs sound alike and YES THEY DO! The upbeat tempo songs have a very distinct sound and the slower tempos are so slow I would think I was sleep walking.

I'm praying that when I finally watch New Moon these songs will fit, they had to be chosen to fit certain scenes, right? I've even heard a few say they like this sound track better than Twilight's sorry but at least with the Twilight Soundtrack you had a mix, New Moon is such a one trick pony I just get pissed.

Trust me I've tried to listen to the sound track on many occasions, while going to work, at works where music is the only way I make it through the day, at home while pretending to cook. And I'm still bored.

I think who ever put this soundtrack together missed out when they passed up 100Monkeys. They have a great eclectic sound that would have vastly IMPROVED this monstrosity of a CD.
Whew...and here I didn't think I had much to say.

Please remember SOMBER does not mean BORING! Somber can be good.

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE — MEET ME ON THE EQUINOX (((BORING)))
When I first heard Death Cab was on the soundtrack I was instantly disappointed and when I finally heard Meet Me on the Equinox, was not surprised how much I disliked the song. And it didn’t help my local station played it when my alarm went off at 5:30 am did not make me a happy blogger.

BAND OF SKULLS — FRIENDS (((ROCK)))
Hands down best song on the soundtrack, I don’t know what the band looks like but in my imaginary video the guys are slightly geeky with tatts and piercings drinking whiskey shots at the local bar. The ‘Beautiful’ friends aren’t your usual beautiful people but oddly beautiful. And the lead singer will be wearing skinny pants and look like he needs to be fed! And the girl of his dreams will be some girl under 100lbs., who sports a lip ring and platinum blond hair.

THOM YORKE — HEARING DAMAGE (((BORING)))
So….this song is 5 minutes of time I’ll never get back. The somber voice with the electronic beats drove me up effing wall. NEXT!

LYKKE LI — POSSIBILITY (((BORING)))
Is it possible to die from boredom? After listening to this song I’m starting to believe it’s a possibility.

THE KILLERS — A WHITE DEMON LOVE SONG (((Sad)))
I love the Killers and was excited when I heard they were on the soundtrack but I this song is just plain blah. I don’t know if I like it (sorry NO LOVE!) but I don’t hate it.

ANYA MARINA — SATELLITE HEART (((Not Sure)))
This song had promise but in the end I was bored. I stopped listening to the words so I made no connection.

MUSE — I BELONG TO YOU (NEW MOON REMIX) ((((ROCK))))
I like this version of I Belong to You, I get very irritated with the original version. Either way Muse rocks my socks off as usual.

BON IVER & ST. VINCENT — ROSYLN (((BORING)))
This song is simply boring. Why hurt myself putting this on repeat. ((((NEXT)))

BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB — DONE ALL WRONG (((Not Sure)))
This song made me want to strap on some chaps and sit in a saloon and drink whiskey. Part of me like but again boredom sets in.

HURRICANE BELLS — MONSTERS (((ROCKS)))
LOVE this song too, almost as much as Friends. I love to sing it off key on repeat for hours at a time.

SEA WOLF — THE VIOLET HOUR (((Not Sure)))
I like this song but not in love with it, the beat is nice, great voice and pretty catchy. Okay I LIKE IT!!! YAH!!!

OK GO — SHOOTING THE MOON (((NOPE.COM)))
Yeah this is the song that literally gives me a headache. Too much going on. (((NEXT)))

GRIZZLY BEAR — SLOW LIFE ((((BORING)))
Another song where time stopped and it wasn’t because Rob Pattinson walked into the room. This is just another form of torture.

EDITORS — NO SOUND BUT THE WIND (((BORING)))
Sigh….why? There is nothing worst than an irritably boring song.

ALEXANDRE DESPLAT — NEW MOON (THE MEADOW) (((Not Sure)))
I crave a glass of wine when I listen to this so that’s NOT too bad. Just not my cup of tea but yet still soothing.

4 Four Bonus Songs Offered for 'New Moon' Soundtrack

The soundtrack of "The Twilight Saga's New Moon will include four exclusive bonus tracks in addition to the fifteen songs announced earlier. The news of the extra tracks came out along with reports that the pre-ordering for the album has been launched on iTunes on Tuesday, September 29.

The bonus tracks are "Solar Midnite" by Lupe Fiasco, "All I Believe In" by The Magic Numbers and Amadou & Mariam, "Die Fledermaus - Duettino: Ach, ich darf nicht hin zu dir" by APM Orchestra, and "Wandrers Nachtlied II, Op. 96, No. 3, D.768" by Ulf Bastlein. In addition to the four songs, iTunes version soundtrack will also include Death Cab for Cutie's music video for "Meet Me On The Equinox".

Besides, by pre-ordering the soundtrack through iTunes now, fans will get an immediate download of Anya Marina's "Satellite Heart". The song, which is listed in between The Killers' "A White Demon Love Song" and Muse's "I Belong To You ('New Moon' Remix)" in the album, had been debuted on Monday, September 28, through her MySpace.

"The Twilight Saga's New Moon" soundtrack is comprised solely of 15 "original and exclusive" songs. The musicians contributing include Thom Yorke and OK Go among many others. The song list unfortunately doesn't include Robert Pattinson's "Blue October". The soundtrack is set to come out in stores across the U.S. on October 20, a month prior to the theatrical release of the "Twilight" sequel.

The Killers Confirmed for New Moon Soundtrack

Along with Death Cab for Cutie's confirmation and release of their single, Meet Me on the Equinox, on the New Moon Soundtrack we have confirmation of several more bands.

According to HitFix:

Representatives for The Killers and Grizzly Bear have confirmed that each will be included on the "Twilight Saga: New Moon" soundtrack, according to an article in the New York Times.

"New Moon" music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas, who also crafts the music playlists behind "Gossip Girl" and "Grey's Anatomy," sat down with the newspaper to chat about crafting the tracklist, which will be revealed unto the world tomorrow (Sept. 18).

Patsavas declined to comment on the two above mentioned bands, and mentioned she was "confident" that Thom Yorke, Bon Iver and Band of Skulls -- three acts that "New Moon" director Chris Weitz exclusively revealed to HitFix as participants -- would be in the final cut.

"This is a much more somber movie than 'Twilight,'" Patsavas said of the first film. "There is a lot of love lost, so the artists that are going to make up the soundtrack reflect that longing - a lot of acoustic instruments, a lot of a cappella singing. This soundtrack definitely feels a bit more indie than the last one."

Her company/label Chop Shop is releasing the album on Oct. 20, in conjunction with Atlantic.

We've already tried to tell you a few times what a phenomenal band Grizzly Bear is. Plus, the band has gotten some love from Jay-Z and Beyonce, and even had a song makeover by none other than Michael McDonald.

As many "Twilight" junkies know, Death Cab For Cutie's "Meet Me on the Equinox" -- the soundtrack's first single -- was released to MTV during the MTV VMAs on Sunday. Listen to the whole track below.

Jackson Rathbone Produces a Girlfriend

In a recent interview with MTV, Jackson revealed his new project; producing an indie film by the name of Girlfriend.

“I’m actually producing my first film this year called ‘Girlfriend,’” he says. “New director Justin Lerner kind of made a splash at a couple festivals last year with a short film he did.”

Justin Lerner is a UCLA film school grad, who has been featured at numerous film festivals, including Sundance. Jackson wouldn't reveal any plot points, but did have this to say about the film:

“It’s an exciting time. I get to play a part in it and have a little bit more say behind the scenes, behind the camera, which is really interesting. It’s what I’ve always really wanted to get into. I love film. I love the art behind it.”

He is quickly setting himself up as a triple threat; actor (his latest projects include The Last Airbender, Lords of Chaos, and of course, New Moon), musician (check out the 100 Monkeys website!), producer and director. Whew! And even with all that burgeoning talent, he remains humble and thankful.

“I wake up everyday and I just thank God I’m alive and get to do this,” Jackson gushes. “It’s incredible.”

UK's Coldplay to Grace New Moon Soundtrack?

Once again, in keeping with the UK spirit, the band Coldplay may indeed be included on the New Moon soundtrack. The all-knowing "Oracle" on the band's website had this response to a fan's question:

The Oracle replies:

It's very likely that a Coldplay song will end up on the soundtrack to the Twilight sequel given that Stephenie Meyer has credited Coldplay, amongst others, on the inner sleeve for "being instrumental in staving off the writer's block".


According to Stephenie Meyer, the band actually plays a big part for her in the entire Saga. They are listed on the playlist's for each published book. They weren't listed for Midnight Sun, but may just be found there if she completed it. So, even if they don't make the cut for New Moon, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they'll make it into one of the movie's soundtracks before it's over with.

Sam Bradley Talks to J-14 About Twilight, New Moon & Pal, Robert Pattinson

J-14 magazine recently sat down with Sam Bradley, co-writer of the song 'Never Think' sung by his longtime friend, Robert Pattinson, in Twilight. Here are a few tidbits. More can be found on their website and for the full interview pick up the mag on newsstands now.

J-14: Did you always know that you wanted to do music as a career?
Sam: Yes. I think when I had written my first song, I was ready. I was like, "Oh my god! I love this. I want to do this for the rest of my life." It hasn't really become a career until fairly recently, but I've been given a gift, a platform with a phenomenon here that is Twilight. It's a great thing to be attached to.

J-14: Have you written anything specifically for the sequel?
Sam:There's nothing specific, but I write about a lot of different things so there are things that may fit.

J-14: What has it been like to see Rob go through all of this craziness?
Sam: I think he deals with it like anyone else would. He's a blessed man right now and he's enjoying himself, but it's his job and this is his life that he has chosen.

Chris Weitz Talks New Moon

In an interview with MetroNews, New Moon director Chris Weitz gives us an insight into his vision of the movie and how it will be different from Twilight.

Q. How does it feel to take over directorial duties of such a successful franchise?

A. On the one hand, it’s exciting to take over a successful franchise. On the other, it’s daunting. There are so many fans who have high expectations for this film, but it’s made easy by the fact that I inherited this amazing cast who are certainly very talented. So half of the time, I’m just overjoyed to be a part of this and the other half, I’m nervous that I’m going to be hunted down and killed by a pack of 14-year-old teenage girls in about a year’s time!

Q. What was your reaction when you were first offered the job?

A. I was surprised because it happened very suddenly, and I had a week and a half to decide whether I was gong to do it or not. Then I saw the first film, I saw the case and I thought, 'This is going to be great, actually. Kristen, Rob and Taylor were great' - that’s what convinced me to do it. And I read the book and I thought I saw my way of making a good version of the book. It’s really a question of whether I can do justice to the book and to please the readers. That’s my job. It’s not to run away with it and just do my version of things. It’s to be faithful to their experience of reading it.

Q. “Twilight”, the first installment of the series, received some criticism for not being 100 per cent true to the book. Are you addressing some of these issues?

A. It’s impossible to be completely faithful to every single page of a book because movies don’t have enough time. So you end up cutting things and combining things. But I would say that we’re definitely using the book as our bible. My take on this film is the film is the book and Stephanie Mayer is my main resource for everything in this. I’m constantly checking with her to see if it’s something a character would do or a detail is right. You can never absolutely please everybody but my main intention is to satisfy the fans of the book.

Q. You’re a very visual director. What’s your vision for New Moon?

A. We’ve got an amazing visual effects team. The whole idea is to use the full palette of colors, to have our shadows be very dark and to have our colours be very rich so that we can experience the full range of emotional texture. The idea is that this will look like a Victorian narrative painting in a way, with those medieval jewel-like colours as well as very glossy deep blacks, and for the composition of the frames to be classical. In some ways, this is going to be a rather old-fashioned film. There are elements that incorporate the latest technology and there are things that are very dynamic in the action scenes. But it’s more Dr. Zhivago than Iron Man.

Q. Dr. Zhivago was a romance, much like Twilight…

A. Well, these books are wonderful romances and appeal to people’s sense of their lives and loves. At the same time, they’re also very grand in scope.

Q. Is it a way of aiming at older audiences?

A. I think that would be nice, too. Actually, I think there’s an older audience for the books as well -- which is the hidden demographic that people don’t acknowledge, that people’s mom’s are reading this as well! I want to render a version that satisfies the fans of the book but also appeals to an older audience as well. Alexander Desplats is going to do the music, which is another great thing for me. He’s someone I worked with before. I think he’s immensely talented. So the idea is to make something beautiful.

Q. Is the music very important in this kind of film?

A. It is. The book itself is a very internalized narrative and music can be extraordinarily helpful in conveying those kinds of nuances of emotion which otherwise what you would rely on is voiceover or people flat out stating what they feel, which they never, ever do. So it helps you avoid exposition and it can make it intro a really gorgeous nuanced affair. Films enjoy more senses that almost any other art form, so music is going to play a tremendous role in this.

Q. Could you tell us about New Moon and how it’s different from Twilight?

A. I think we get an opportunity to sort of expand our scope -- from the confines of the forest to Italy. Your sense of mythology of this world is deepened so that the story that underlies what was going on in the first movie becomes more and more clear. And there are a lot of secrets that were set up in the first book and the first movie that come to light in the second movie. So there are a lot of surprises in store.

Q. How do you keep the continuity of the story?

A. Well, we try to maintain a coherence so that nothing seems unrealistic or bizarre. One of the strengths of Stephenie Meyer’s books is that they manage to convey the normalness of people’s lives and the normalness of the main character, and yet feeds on all those supernatural and extraordinary elements. When we go to Italy [to shoot], we are dealing with this 2,000-year-old order of vampires. The key is to cast it and to design it in such a way that it doesn’t fall completely from the story, but it’s a beautiful and intricate part of the whole thing, while at the same time, giving you the sense that you’re opening up to this much bigger world. That part of the story is a reversal of the usual rules. Bella goes to save Edward. It’s not the guy saving the girl; it’s the other way around.

Q. Can you comment on some of your casting choices, like Dakota Fanning?

A. Dakota Fanning is playing Jane, who’s the most dangerous and evil of all of them. And it’s a part where she plays against type because you don’t think of Dakota Fanning as either evil or dangerous. But she’s an extraordinary actress and we’re lucky to have her. Michael Sheen plays the head of the Volturi, who are the law and order of the vampire world. I think he’s an extraordinarily accomplished actor and I just feel, again, fairly fortunate to have someone of his calibre.

Q. What is it about this story that resonates so much with its audience?

A. It deals with emotional occurrences that everyone has gone through. You’ve got all this supernatural stuff, but really what it’s about is falling in love for the first time, losing that love, wondering if you’ll ever be happy again, the restorative power of friendship, having to choose between the guy who seems the right guy or whether you’re going to hold out for the wrong person. This is true of girls, boys, men, women. We’ve all had the experience of falling in love or having unrequited love or being left and feeling miserable and hoping you can get someone back. All these things are universal.

Q. Stephen King wrote in a column that there is no substance, nor emotion in these books, unlike Harry Potter that he loves. What are the qualities of the books in your opinion?

A. The books address the feelings of love and loss that Stephen King isn’t particularly concerned with. (Laughs) I’m not terribly surprised that he says that. I would say, “physician, heal thyself.” Actually, the reason that they’re so successful is that people identify with the main character, with her sense of insecurity, with her sense of being singled out by someone extraordinarily special, with the sense of being broken up with, which is something everyone has experienced unless they are terribly, terribly lucky, and with the deep value of friendship as a way to heal. So I must respectfully disagree with Stephen King. (Laughs)

Q. How would you describe the books to someone who hasn’t read them?

A. I’d say it’s a story about heartbreak and reunion. It’s also a story about humans, vampires and werewolves at the same time. It has these elements which are all about human feelings and then it has elements which are magic, wonder, surprise and suspense.

Kristen reveals that the break up scene has not yet been shot, and she seems nervous about the prospect of delving into that kind of pain.

Speaking of pain... Rob talks about the Volturi scene where he gets beaten up by a number of vampires - including Dakota Fanning as Jane - and trying to come up with an appropriate way to portray the agony. He describes it as "horrible" and "really disgusting," but I think we all know that nothing Rob does could be either. ;)

And in true Rob fashion, he blurts out his on-set code name without a moment's hesitation. Kind of debunks his earlier statement that Kristen's GQ "Rob can't lie" quote was inaccurate.

He also mentions that he is booked for the next year with various projects. He reveals that he will be starring in a romantic comedy of sorts, but describes it as "more dark than you could possibly imagine." We assume he is talking about Summit's Remember Me, which is set to begin filming this summer.

And while there are no plans for him to be featured on the New Moon soundtrack, he does mention that he is working on composing the soundtrack to another movie - though he won't spill which.

The dark nature of New Moon is further revealed in these exclusive interviews with the cast. From what was said, the masochism and obsession will definitely be translated from the page to the screen, and I for one am excited to see the darker side of Twilight. (And Edward.)

ET New Moon Coverage: Night Two

In last night's installment of Entertainment Tonight's three-part exclusive New Moon coverage, Robert Pattinson reveals five "secrets" about the Twilight sequel.



Secret 1: Bella has a shocking nightmare in which Edward is a "demon." (Hmm... taking a leaf from her first Edward dream in the Twilight book?) Rob and Kristen both confirm that New Moon's Edward is very dark and, according to Rob, disturbing. Dark Edward? Bring it!

Secret 2: Jacob turns biker boy. (Pretty sure this isn't a secret to anyone who has read the books.) According to Taylor, while he has "mad skills" riding his bike, Bella is much better at crashing.

Secret 3: With the help of special effects, a modulated version of Edward's image will appear along with his voice when Bella puts herself in danger.

Secret 4: Robert has no plans to be featured on the New Moon soundtrack. Do you hear that, Rob? It's a sigh of disappointment from women everywhere.

Secret 5: Robert and Kristen are just friends. (Thank you, Captain Obvious.)

For the most part, none of this was news to those of us who have read the books and have been keeping up with the New Moon coverage, but we'll never pass up the opportunity to ogle listen to Rob!
