SNMag: Tell us about your role in The Last Airbender…
Jackson Rathbone: I play a young warrior named Sokka who, along with his sister, discovers a mysterious boy trapped in the ice; they free him and end up on a quest to save the world. It’s a very fantastical story that originated out of the Nickelodeon cartoon and now it’s a live action epic fantasy.

SNMag: Did you have to do any training or physical prep for the role?
JR: There was a good two months of kung fu training in LA and then continued training while we were filming. But it was really fun, I loved it. That’s one of the really cool things about being an actor: you get paid to learn kung fu!

SNMag: What kind of stunts did you have to do?
JR: Mostly it was hand to hand combat. My character doesn’t have any special abilities…so I’d do a lot of scenes where I fight off guys with swords and spears and all I had to fight with was the boomerang. It’s a little bit nerve-wracking, even when it’s a plastic sword coming at you.

SNMag: How was your experience working with M. Night Shyamalan?
JR: It was amazing. The Sixth Sense is one of my favorite thrillers and I love Night’s other work. So it felt like great as an actor to be working with somebody I’ve respected and admired for years.

SNMag: What was your initial reaction when you were cast in Twilight?
JR: It’s a great book series and Jasper has such a lush backstory so I was just really excited. But then I started getting calls from my cousins and they were even more excited than me so that kind of upped the ante – playing a character that my family knows and are excited about seeing me portray on the big screen.

SNMag: Did you realize then it would kick-start your career?
JR: I don’t think it really hit me until I walked the red carpet at the premiere of Twilight. That’s when it was first like, "Oh wow, this is going to be a new experience for me.”

SNMag: What’s one of the most memorable fan encounters you’ve had?
JR: We were filming up in Vancouver for New Moon and I was on my way to get Starbucks. A bunch of fans surrounded me and so I was taking pictures and signing autographs and this woman comes up to me with a 2-year-old child and, without saying a word, hands me her kid and steps back to take a picture. It was just kind of awkward because the kid’s looking at me like, “Who are you?” and I’m looking at the kid like, “I’m sorry, man, I have no idea what’s going on either.” So she snapped a photo, took her kid back and walked away. It’s kind of odd to have a stranger shove a child in your arms.

SNMag: Do we get to see a new side of Jasper in Eclipse?
JR: Yes, we get to see Jasper back when he was a human which was back in the Civil War. So I got to ride a horse again - I grew up riding so it was fun to get back to that.



SNMag: Were you at all into vampire movies before you were cast in Twilight?
JR: I’ve definitely been a fan of the vampire genre for a long time. Interview with the Vampire is an incredible film. I’ve always loved the Dracula films. And Nosferatu is a beautiful, well-crafted film from the 20s that still holds up today, in my opinion.

SNMag: What’s your relationship like with the rest of the cast? How do you spend your time on set?
JR: It’s fun because we play a family on screen and so getting to come back and do these sequels is like a family reunion. A lot of us are musicians as well as actors so we’d all get together in the rooms and we’d have jam sessions and make up songs. I’d play guitar and harmonica, Rob would play guitar and sing or Kristen would play guitar.

SNMag: Who are some of your favorite actors?
JR: I’m just finishing Johnny Depp’s catalogue. I love his style of acting, it’s very organic and down to earth and then it’s also very fantastical at the same time. Clint Eastwood’s the man. And Jack Nicholson, I love his style.

SNMag: Tell us more about your band 100 Monkeys…
JR: We just did 61 shows out of a 100 city tour so we’re taking a small break. But it’s something that we love to do. I’ve been playing music as long as I’ve been acting and I feel so privileged to be able to have both those careers taking off at the same time. One of the things I’m trying to get into is integrating film and music - one of the band members and I produced a film that we both acted in called Girlfriend and 100 Monkeys composed the score for the film.

SNMag: We have to ask: Do you have a girlfriend?
JR: No, no, I am single. I got a lot of stuff going on so it’s hard to find time to even go on a date these days. But that doesn’t mean I’m not looking. So every once in a while I’ll get a day off and try to go on a date if I can…find a nice girl at a coffee shop or something.

SNMag: What can you tell us about your tattoos?
JR: I’ve got six tattoos total. I am planning on getting a couple more maybe within the next month or so. I think my next tattoo is going to be a line out of TS Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. It’s one of my favorite poems ever.

SNMag: What other movies or projects do you have coming up?
JR: Really excited about getting Girlfriend into the festival circuit and putting out my next couple of projects with my production company, Patchmo Entertainment. I’m really excited to get on the other side of the camera, producing and hopefully directing within the next year or two. It’s just a truly exciting time in my life and I don’t take it for granted. I’d rather be working than sleeping!

I don't know how many of you have been waiting fo rthis movie, but I have been chomping at the bit for some more Jax on screen.

The Last Air Bender by M. Night Shyamalan: Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara (Nicola Peltz), a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka (Jackson Rathbone) (with sexhot hair...JS), to restore balance to their war-torn world. Based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon animated TV series, the live-action feature film The Last Airbender is the opening chapter in Aangs struggle to survive.

Even if you're not a fan of anime I urge you to go see this as soon as it hits the theaters on July 2nd, 2010. The special effects look amazing and the characters fit the parts perfectly. (oh, and there's some Jax smooching in it too.)

Jackson's Fighting Words

Jackson Rathbone spoke with MTV about filming The Last Airbender and translating elements of his character into Jasper for New Moon.

Directed by “The Sixth Sense” filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, “Airbender” will bring the story of element-harnessing Avatars to the big screen next July. Rathbone portrays Sokka, a Southern Water tribe Warrior who helps the heroic Aang battle evil. If all goes well, the filmmakers have stated their intent to make it the first part of a trilogy, which would presumably shoot while Rathbone finishes out his work as “Twilight” character Jasper Hale.

Which would be fine with Rathbone, as he told us that playing Sokka allowed him to be much more expressive then he gets to be in “New Moon.” “Jasper is so composed and kind of holding it all back, so getting to play a character where I can just run into people was great! I got to do this fight scene where I get attacked by three different people at the same time; I’m running through a battle trying to find my little sister, worried about where she is, and this guy charges me with a sword! So, I make the split decision to just tackle him, take him straight to the ground, and then someone else comes behind me and tries to slash me in the back - so I pull that guy over me, and he hits his own guy.”

Adding that he also got to “ride on Appa, that big beast flying-bison creature,” Rathbone said that as much as he loves hanging around with emotionally-conflicted Cullens, he also enjoyed being an action star. “It was crazy! I’m attacked by three different people [in that scene], and I have to fend them all off with a boomerang! I’m throwing people over my back, I’m constantly being stabbed at -- it was a blast!

I can't wait to see this movie!

The Last Airbender Trailer

The Last Airbender, the adaptation of the animated series Avatar and Jackson Rathbone's newest project, has finally released a trailer.

In a world where the four elements can be controlled by people known as “Benders”, the Fire Nation is waging a ruthless, oppressive war to control the other great nations. The only hope for stopping the brutal war led by the Firebenders rests on the shoulders of a reluctant young boy named Aang (Noah Ringer). The last known survivor of the peaceful Air Nomads, also known as Airbenders, Aang is also the world’s “Avatar”. The “Avatar” is the physical re-incarnation of the world itself, with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aided by a protective teenage Waterbender named Katara (Nicola Peltz) and her bull-headed brother Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), Aang begins a perilous journey to restore balance to their war-torn world. Standing in their way are Fire Nation Admiral Zhao (Aasif Mandvi) and Prince Zuko (Dev Patel), the banished prince of the Fire Nation who seeks to capture the young Avatar to regain his honor.

It looks to be an entertaining movie with a great cast. There are even rumors that M. Night Shyamalan intends to continue the series with a trilogy, in which case we could be seeing even more of Mr. Rathbone in the crazy mowhawk he's been sporting as of late.

And I, for one, could not be more pleased with that thought.

Jackson Rathbone Produces a Girlfriend

In a recent interview with MTV, Jackson revealed his new project; producing an indie film by the name of Girlfriend.

“I’m actually producing my first film this year called ‘Girlfriend,’” he says. “New director Justin Lerner kind of made a splash at a couple festivals last year with a short film he did.”

Justin Lerner is a UCLA film school grad, who has been featured at numerous film festivals, including Sundance. Jackson wouldn't reveal any plot points, but did have this to say about the film:

“It’s an exciting time. I get to play a part in it and have a little bit more say behind the scenes, behind the camera, which is really interesting. It’s what I’ve always really wanted to get into. I love film. I love the art behind it.”

He is quickly setting himself up as a triple threat; actor (his latest projects include The Last Airbender, Lords of Chaos, and of course, New Moon), musician (check out the 100 Monkeys website!), producer and director. Whew! And even with all that burgeoning talent, he remains humble and thankful.

“I wake up everyday and I just thank God I’m alive and get to do this,” Jackson gushes. “It’s incredible.”

100Monkeys @ Viper Room for Farewell L.A. Gig!

While Jackson Rathbone is back east filming The Last Airbender, his band mates from the 100Monkeys said good bye to their Los Angeles fans tonight at an unexpected show at the Viper Room on Sunset Blvd. On May 9th the guys will kick off their summer tour in Orlando, Florida and from what the guys said they won’t return to Los Angeles until August. Yep that means no 100Monkeys all summer long!
As usual the guys put on a great show! Ben Johnson actually sang lead for Smoke and the Monkey Song (written by his friend Spencer Bell) which is always a treat for me. I love to see BenJ sing he reminds me of a kid whose parents aren’t home and he has the house to himself for the first time ever.
Its still amazes me the energy they create, I don’t think I’ve ever left one of their performances thinking ‘Wow I’m bored!’ but they always leave me wanting more. And when they play Orson Browl and the whole place shakes you wonder where they get that sudden burst of energy and at that point you know it can’t be contained.

I guess until August I will have to live vicariously through the pictures I see posted and hope to get small glimpse of my Monkey men!

Hey you people on the East Coast, take care of the 100Monkeys!! Show them a real good time and please send them back to L.A. with fond memories. So I will review all my old videos and pictures. I might even post a few here and there. I will conduct power searches on YouTube for new video.

The Examiner's Exclusive Interview with Jackson Rathbone

One of our absolutely favorite guys, Jackson Rathbone, chats up the Twilight Examiner, Amanda Bell. He's quite the comedian and reveals that, much like Robert Pattinson, the chicks led him on his career path. He talks about his character in the Twilight Saga, Jasper Hale, his music with 100 Monkeys, his role in the M. Night Shyamalan film, The Last Airbender, and his philosophy on life, happiness and fame. Great job, Amanda, and thanks for sharing our of love of Jackson.

With his wit in mind, I decided to ask Jackson about a concern that some fans, myself included, had about the potential for inconsistencies between his character in Twilight and New Moon. I asked, “In Twilight, Jasper was dancing around the fire while Bella bled out from her James-inflicted wounds, and in New Moon, a little papercut is supposed to send Jasper over the edge. Some fans worry that this inconsistency will de-legitimize some of the scenes in New Moon. How are you and the crew planning to handle this?” Jackson says,

It’s all in the old saying, ‘Location, location, location . . .’ Once you realize the immense animalistic impulses a vampire has, you realize . . . every little thing is more intense. The smell from a vampire-burning bonfire, the adrenaline from the kill, and the exhaustion from the chase . . . basically, in terms of scent, the difference is between a dance studio filled with smells [of] burning and violence, as opposed to the Cullen Family living room, which is filled with the smell of birthday cake. There is no inconsistency, don’t worry.

I asked Jackson about his upcoming role in The Last Airbender, and how he was preparing himself both mentally and physically for the role. Continuing his knack for repartee, Jackson says, “I’ve been training in various styles of Kung Fu since December, and I love it! It connects the body and mind in a way a textbook could never achieve . . . I can kill from 10 feet away with a spear . . . Purty sweeeeeetttt . . .” Best to stay back, then, fans – not only does his smile deceive, but he also has been brushing up on his martial arts and spearing capacities (that goes for you, especially, paparazzi).

Jackson added to his fans, “I wanna thank each and every one of you for existing! Without you, I’d be acting in an empty theatre . . . again. Much love, and respect.”

Jackson Rathbone guest stars on Criminal Minds

Criminal Minds will finally air the episode guest starring Jackson Rathbone this week. From what I hear this is a good show but its not something that's on my weekly schedule. BellaEdwardCullen (www.bellaedward-cullen.com) posted a few pics from the set. 

Jackson is currently filming The Last Airbender followed by New Moon starring Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. 

Jackson Rathbone plays Philly Pub

The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Jackson Rathbone (Twilight and Band: 100Monkeys) went to a local pub and played the guitar during his time off from filming the new M. Night Shyamalan's film The Last Airbender. The rest of the cast returns from Greenland this week and filming will resume on Wednesday.

100monkeys to play The Mint TONIGHT!

100monkeys play tonight at The Mint in LA. They'll take the stage at 9pm after Drew Brandmeier aka PORT and before Vosotros and The Absolute. Should be an excellent show, so be sure to stop by and show them some love! Not sure if Jackson Rathbone will be performing or not as he may be working on The Last Airbender. But, fear not, they won't disappoint!

Jackson in Philly!!

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer Jackson Rathbone has been in Philly for rehersals for his new M. Night Shayamalan movie The Last Airbender.

Night Shyamalan, Dev Patel, Jackson Rathbone, and Nicola Peltz slogged through the snow yesterday to Nicetown, where rehearsals started at the production office for the action film The Last Airbender. The weather is a warmup for Ilulissat, Greenland, where shooting starts in two weeks. The production moves back to Philly in April.
