Rob Pattinson: AnOther Man

Holy hot fucking Christ.

DazedDigital previews issue 9 of AnOther Man out on October 1, which features Robert Pattinson on the cover, shot by Hedi Slimane and styled by Nicola Formichetti. Dave Calhoun speak to the 23-year-old Twilight star about the pressures of fame and the craft of acting: “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.”

Here is an excerpt from the Robert Pattinson feature written by Dave Calhoun.

Was Pattinson aware of the loyalty of fans of the Twilight books? It looks like the sort of obsessive fandom that can turn into anger and even hatred when an adaptation isn’t to their liking. Did he know what he was letting himself in for? “It’s strange because even though the figures show that the books were successful and sold millions of copies, you couldn’t even buy them in London. I tried a couple of bookshops and they weren’t available. Hardly anyone I knew had read them apart from one girl, a friend of my sister. I had no idea at all. I’d seen Kristen Stewart in Into the Wild and some of the director Catherine Hardwicke’s other films, and that’s all I thought it was, something really small.”

His manner is very laid back. He doesn’t sound thrusting or ambitious, more like he’s just going with the flow and enjoying things. Is he going to harness his newfound fame and box-office appeal to approach the kind of filmmakers he wants to work with in the future? He’s not so sure. “Annoyingly, there are so few parts I feel I can add anything to, or that I want to do.” But he knows what he doesn’t need. “I don’t want to be an actor for the sake of it. I don’t find any particular pleasure in being an attention-seeker.”

Dakota Fanning: A Classy Character

The New York Times released a photoshoot and interview with New Moon star Dakota Fanning today, and she looks impeccable. One of my favorite things about Dakota is the fact that she is comfortable being a fifteen year old girl; while she continually takes on risky roles, she never seems to be pushing the envelope with her sexuality or trying to be something she's not in her personal life. And she looks incredibly classy and self-possesed because of it.

Dakota Fanning is so self-possessed and so articulate that the only reminder you’re speaking with a 15-year-old and not someone much older is her occasional tendency to giggle when she’s sharing some droll aspect of her life.

Such a life. With the camera running, Fanning has been kidnapped, beaten, covered with live snakes, sexually assaulted and menaced by beings human and not. Under a less constant gaze (though there are always cameras), Fanning attends a rigorous private school in Los Angeles, is a cheerleader and wears a pair of Marni platforms "every single day." We know this because there are photos to prove it; even though the subject is an unnervingly articulate film actress, she is also a teenage girl pleased to exercise the prerogative that states that for a period in one’s life, a particular pair of shoes — or a bag or a boy, for that matter — can be perfect in every respect and should be worn (or phoned) every day.

She doesn’t concern herself with privacy in the traditional sense, figuring that exposure comes with the territory. What she guards is that part of her life that is unseeable. "You have to be able to separate your personal life from playing a character. . . . That’s not your real life." Good thing; next up for her is New Moon, the second film in the Twilight series, in which Fanning takes a fangs-first plunge into the darkness as Jane, a very nasty vampire who functions as a kind of vampire enforcer. She didn’t bother trying to find some redeeming characteristic in Jane, she says. "She’s pretty much evil," Fanning says with a laugh. "Yes, she may feel like she’s just doing her job by torturing people, but that’s evil."
