WW's Fic Rec Friday

Happy Friday, guys! I for one have been ready for Friday since ohh... about Monday.

So, I have a confession to make. Lately I've kind of been cheating on Edward and digging on Jasper. And not just any Jasper, not Jasper the kind of secondary good friend character (like in Just One of the Guys), but Jasper the love interest. And not with Alice either. No no, I'm talking about... Bellsper. *gasp!* I know, I know... but I can't help it. He's so damn sexy.

Previously I rec'd Son of a Preacher Man by LaViePastiche. Stangsperella is one of my favorite pairings - EVER - but now she is (as she has been threatening/promising from the beginning) shifting the story to an Edward/Bella pairing. And I am sad panda. So, I went in search of other Bellspers to assuage the ache.

Summary: Sometimes, you can't fight chemistry, no matter the situation. "I know all your favorite spots and tonight we will connect the dots." Jasper/Bella. AH.

The first thing that struck me about this fic was the present-tense used. Normally, I have a hard time with this tense, but in this case it fit so beautiful; it pulled me into the moment and made me feel as though I was experiencing it along with the characters.

The first chapter is sweet and poignant; I felt their love for one another in every caress and whisper. She purposefully keeps the character names from us until the very end - and the fact that it was a Bella/Jasper pairing simultaneously shocked the hell out of me and made perfect sense. I could see them together in this.

The next two chapters begin to illustrate their struggles as a couple - all is not as easy as it seems in the first scene.

The chapters are short but illustrative; each vignette a small, descriptive window into their relationship and the challenges they face - they say so much with so little.

So read it. Embrace the Bellsper. Come back and we'll talk and I'll further enable your new addiction. Do it. I need comrades in this new endeavor.

WW's Fic Rec Friday

A little late, but it's still Friday, right? On with the show...

PLEASE NOTE: SOME OF THE CONTENT RECOMMENDED HEREIN MAY NOT BE SUITABLE FOR OUR UNDERAGE READERS. FICS RATED 'M' ARE INTENDED FOR THOSE OVER THE AGE OF 18. PLEASE USE DISCRETION WHEN CLICKING ANY OF THE BELOW LINKS.

Resident Geek by cdunbar

Summary: Geeky Edward thinks he has absolutely no shot with the popular, beautiful Bella. Is he right, or will she be one of the many girls who thinks geeks make for better lovers? M for language, sexuality and some underage drinking. A little OOC… okay, a lot OOC.

Edward is a nerdy Tech Support guy, Bella is a popular sorority sister. They meet at a party when she asks him to kiss her and pretend to be her boyfriend to protect her from another guy. One thing leads to another, and they begin dating. Edward teaches her how to play Dungeons and Dragons, and Bella pulls him out of his shell. At this point it's high on the cute and low on the angst, though there are some hints to future angsty times; Edward is completely inexperienced and very insecure, and Bella is hiding a secret about her past.

Cdunbar is clearly very knowledgeable in just about every facet of geekdom; each chapter is filled with sci-fi and comic book references. She is very kind to us non-geek speakers and explains each reference in an author's note at the end of the chapter.

A very cute story with depth that I highly recommend.

Wild Swan by Scarlett_Letters
Rated: M for mature themes, language and sexual situations
::FF.net:: ::Twilighted:: ::Twilighted Forum::

Summary: Bella decides that it's time to find out who she really is and that means stepping out of her privileged life as a Cullen and taking flight on her own. Can different paths lead two people to the same destination?

Angst, angst, angst. Until I read this story, I didn't even know I liked angst. Or maybe it's not the angst I like, but the story itself. Bella and Edward's marriage has fallen apart and Bella wants out. After years of burying her pain and trying to be someone she is not, Bella finally finds the strength to leave Edward and take the time to discover herself.

It is heartbreaking, but Scarlett writes with such unflinching realism that you are drawn into the stories and the characters. There are glimmers of hope that you cling to. You are torn in your ingrained B/E shipping and the knowledge that they truly do not belong together at this point in their lives.

I find my heart aches after each chapter, but she has promised that we've now hit ground zero and are on the upswing. Thank god. I don't think my heart could have taken anymore. This is not light hearted reading, folks - but it is excellent.

And in a unique move, Scarlett has put up a companion blog to the story, Wild Swan Wandering. It is written from Bella's perspective, detailing her travels and pursuits on her mission to find herself. Scarlett even goes so far as to write comments from other characters, Rose, Alice, Emmett and even Seth. Such an awesome idea, and it ties into the story so well.

Son of a Preacher Man by LaViePastiche

Summary: Jasper Hale, 21, is the son of a popular televangelist in Phoenix, and he couldn’t be any further from a church-going goody two shoes. His attitude towards work, attending class, or contributing positively to society is lackadaisical at best. He drinks, smokes, and has a penchant for deflowering teenage girls. Bella attends private school with Edward Cullen, a senior who she’s been in love with since 9th grade, when he moved to Phoenix. Too bad Edward is dating the most beautiful girl at St. Mary’s, and doesn’t even know Bella exists. But when Jasper sets his sights on Bella, Edward can’t help but take notice. Will he protect her from girlfriend Rosalie’s impious older brother? AH/AU/OOC and all that good stuff.

There's not much else I can add to that thorough summary except to say: HOLY HALE is this irreverent bad boy Jasper hot. Bella is feisty yet naive and unknowingly the biggest tease in teenage girl history. Jasper is not used to having the brakes put on him time and again, but yet he is drawn to Bella and cannot seem to bring himself to walk away and find someone more willing. Edward was completely oblivious to Bella until he heard Jasper was going out with her, and suddenly she is all he can think about.

Hmmm... wonder what's going to happen. It's an entertaining read with complex undertones and just enough heat to keep you on your toes and hoping for more.
